The interactive table below displays data for Alabama PCPs, aggregated by community. In 2020, PCPs were found in 230 different communities in Alabama. An incorporated community is classified by the US Census Bureau as either a city, a town, or a place. A community is further classified as urban if it falls within one of fourteen different urbanized areas, or rural otherwise.

The five largest cities (Birmingham, Huntsville, Mobile, Montgomery, and Tuscaloosa) have 41% of all PCPs.

Distribution by Rural/Urbanized Area

Alabama has 14 urbanized areas. Nine are based on large cities and the other five are based on clusters of two or three smaller cities that are in close proximity. A PCP practicing in a community that falls into an urbanized area is classified as urban; otherwise she is classified as rural.

Over half of all Alabama PCPs (55%) are in the five largest urbanized areas: Birmingham, Huntsville, Mobile, Montgomery, and Tuscaloosa. Moreover, 74% of all urban PCPs are in these five areas.
